Idiot's guide to track a software project

Before coming to this organization I had zero (if not negative) knowledge and experience of software projects. Probably I came across as a guy with a management degree and a comfortable aptitude and a short learning curve in technical stuffs. Nevertheless my experiences in this organisation have shattered many of the project management principles that I had heared at IRMA.
